Fridge Voyeur is a virtual visit into the chill zone of the Spoon Crew — our team, our friends, and some of your favorite wellness gurus. We may eat a lot of soups and stews, but there’s a whole lot of variety, and a little bit of naughty, going on behind closed doors. We know you want a peek ;)

This week we’re peeking into the fridge of Serena Marie RD, a registered dietitian, runner, and podcast host.

Splendid Spoon: Hey Serena! Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Serena Marie: Hey guys! I’m a real food registered dietitian based in Brooklyn. My focus is on using real food to help real people get real healthy. The ‘RD’ after my name means I’ve received a national licensure to practice medical nutrition therapy after completing training in nutritional science at Cornell and Yale. I counsel athletes and weight loss clients, teach on The Running Lifestyle Show Podcast, and host monthly online nutrition challenges at Real Food Macros!

I also love to run, practice kettlebell swings, walk aimlessly around Brooklyn, and cook!

SS: What are the five staples you can’t live without?
SM: My five staples definitely change from month to month! Right now I’m obsessed with avocado, white albacore tuna, bok choy, sweet potatoes, and almond butter.

SS: What’s the weirdest thing in your fridge?
SM: Hmm…are capers weird? I really love having capers in my tuna salad! [Capers aren’t that weird, but we’ll allow it — Ed.]

SS: What’s your favorite sweet and what’s your favorite savory?
SM: My favorite way to sate my sweet tooth is with plain Greek yogurt and chocolate chips! I love the combination of bitter yogurt with sweet chocolate, plus the protein in the yogurt keeps me from overeating.

My favorite savory is definitely sweet potato fries! I cook them at home by spiralizing sweet potatoes to make curly fries, and then bake them with duck fat from Prospect Park’s farmers’ market. I add a sprinkle of truffle salt at the end — they’re so delicious!

SS: If you were one thing in your fridge, what would it be?
SM: Can I be guacamole? First, green is the best color — it’s the color of life, nutrient density, and chlorophyll. Second, guacamole is always the life of the part-ay! It makes everything taste better, makes everyone happy, and helps your body fight inflammation. My life purpose is to help others use food to fight inflammation and to empower them to have fun while doing so!

SS: What food do you turn to when you want something comforting or nostalgic? Although we eat to keep our bodies strong and healthy, food also connects us to our past, to friends, and to different times in our lives.
SM: I’m Italian and grew up eating tons of pasta on an almost daily basis when I was young. However, pasta is something that I now avoid. Instead, I use spaghetti squash, mushrooms, or zucchini noodles as a pasta substitute and add sugar-free tomato sauce. Another favorite of mine is to make a spaghetti squash casserole by baking the squash with tomato sauce, cheese, eggs, and spices. It’s like a healthy lasagna!
